Formula

`Net Profit = Sale Price − COGS − CAC − Shipping − Shopify Fees`

Sale price is derived from your markup on COGS. Shopify fees (transaction + payment processing) are calculated on the sale price. Net profit is what remains after every cost is subtracted.

Example `COGS $18 · Markup 130% → Sale $41.40 · CAC $12 · Shipping $5 · Fees 2.9% → Net Profit ≈ $5.20`

FAQs

What is the difference between markup and margin? Markup is the percentage added on top of cost — 130% markup on a $10 item = $23 sale price. Margin is profit as a percentage of the sale price — ($13 ÷ $23) = 56.5%. Markup is always a higher number than margin for the same product. What Shopify fees should I include? What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?

The concept

## CAC is the variable Amazon sellers underestimate

On Amazon, discovery is largely built into the platform. On Shopify, every sale carries a real customer acquisition cost that has to be subtracted before you know true profit — and CAC is often the single biggest lever separating a profitable DTC brand from an unprofitable one at the same price point.

## Markup vs. margin — the confusion that hides thin profit

A 130% markup sounds aggressive, but it only converts to roughly 56% gross margin — and that's before CAC, shipping, and Shopify fees are subtracted. Sellers moving from Amazon (where margin is the standard language) to Shopify (where markup is often quoted) can end up thinking they're more profitable than they are.

Common mistakes

## What sellers get wrong

- ✕ Quoting markup and assuming it equals margin — a 130% markup is only ~56% gross margin, and net margin after CAC and fees is lower still.
- ✕ Ignoring CAC drift — a customer acquisition cost that looked fine at low ad spend can climb sharply as campaigns scale.
- ✕ Using Amazon-style profit assumptions on Shopify without accounting for the real cost of driving your own traffic.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is the percentage added on top of cost — 130% markup on a $10 item = $23 sale price. Margin is profit as a percentage of the sale price — ($13 ÷ $23) = 56.5%. Markup is always a higher number than margin for the same product.

### What Shopify fees should I include?

On the Basic Shopify plan using Shopify Payments, you pay 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. If using a third-party payment gateway, add a 2% transaction fee on top. The Shopify plan reduces processing to 2.6% and Advanced to 2.4%.

### What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?

Industry benchmark is 20–40% net margin for product-based Shopify stores. Below 15% is fragile once you factor in returns, chargebacks, and rising CAC. Top DTC brands on Shopify target 30–50% margins through owned traffic and repeat purchase revenue.
