Formula

`Net Profit = Adj. Revenue − COGS − Shipping − Platform Fees − Ad Spend`

Adjusted revenue accounts for returns first. Platform fees are then calculated on that adjusted figure. Every cost layer is subtracted to arrive at true take-home net profit.

Example `Revenue $25K · COGS $8K · Shipping $3K · Fees 15% · Ads $2.5K · Returns 3% → Net Profit ≈ $7,275`

FAQs

What platform fee should I use? Amazon charges 8–15% referral fee depending on category (plus FBA fees). Shopify charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on the Basic plan. eBay charges 12.9% + $0.30. Start with 15% for Amazon; adjust down for Shopify or DTC. Why include returns in the calculation? What is a good e-commerce profit margin?

The concept

## Why returns belong in a profit calculation

Returns are often left out of quick margin math, but they reduce effective revenue and add restocking, inspection, and sometimes disposal costs on top. A 5% return rate can cut margin by 3–5 percentage points on an already thin-margin product — enough to flip a profitable SKU into a loss.

## One calculator, multiple platforms

Platform fee is the one input that changes most between channels — roughly 8–15% for Amazon referral fees, 2.9%+$0.30 for Shopify's Basic plan, 12.9%+$0.30 for eBay. Everything else in the profit equation — COGS, shipping, ad spend, returns — behaves the same regardless of platform, which is why one model works across all of them.

Common mistakes

## What sellers get wrong

- ✕ Calculating margin before returns are factored in, overstating true profitability by several percentage points.
- ✕ Using a generic platform fee percentage instead of the actual fee for the specific channel and category.
- ✕ Excluding ad spend from the profit calculation entirely, which is common when marketing and finance track separately.

## FAQ

### What platform fee should I use?

Amazon charges 8–15% referral fee depending on category (plus FBA fees). Shopify charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on the Basic plan. eBay charges 12.9% + $0.30. Start with 15% for Amazon; adjust down for Shopify or DTC.

### Why include returns in the calculation?

Returns reduce effective revenue and add hidden costs — restocking, inspection, repackaging, and sometimes disposal. A 5% return rate can cut margin by 3–5 percentage points on thin-margin products.

### What is a good e-commerce profit margin?

Industry average net margin is 5–15%. DTC brands with strong organic traffic target 20–30%. Amazon private label operators in competitive categories typically see 15–25% after all fees. Below 10% is fragile.
